Hon Mr. Premier,
I wish to express my concern about the province’s recent change in policy relating to those potential immigrants wishing to be recommended for Permanent Resident status here on PEI. These people were welcomed here, invited to be a part of our society and are now faced with a new evaluation procedure which will unfairly prevent many of them attaining that goal.
I support their request:
- That those who are already here get grandfathered into the pathway to Permanent Residency;
- That those who are here in the retail and service sector continue to have access to Permanent Residency;
- That those whose work permits are about to expire be granted an extension.
These actions would resolve the immediate issue in a fair and reasonable manner, allowing those people already in the province to be assessed in accordance with the rules in effect when they came to the province.
I understand that this is a complex issue with long term implications for the province. If as you say changes to the policy are needed they could apply to those candidates who came or come to the province after the changes to the rules were announced.
These individuals are making a valuable contribution to the life of this province. They have fit in here successfully and become good employees, good neighbours and good friends. Their success in integrating here shows this. It is also to some measure an indication that we live up to our proud claim to be a generous and welcoming society.
